In this session We had Lee Taituha the HOD of the School of Foundation Studies talking to us and sharing his experiences in managing people.
Lee talked about his previous employment and the transitions that took place as he changed jobs. During this time he stated that he learnt a lot from managing different types of people.
He gave an example of a situation in which he had to deal with a staff in an attempt to reduce operational costs of his school. the point he thought of as being very important was to take time to listen to the staff concerned and establish facts before demanding justification for the actions taken. At the same time allow the staff to reflect on their actions for a solution. A good manager will be able detect anomalies in the systems in place and tactfully address it.
What interested me was that he was not afraid to say that he could be seen as being in favour with his superiors rather than for his staff. It was important for all to understand that there was goals and visions put in place by senior management and his job is to action it. Managing the circumstances in which the teaching staff is required to produce the desired result is the challenge that requires people skills offering timely help and supporting actions needed.
